The King’s Warriors Soccer Club traveled to Greensboro, NC, to open the fall, 2020, soccer season on Saturday, August 29.
The Warriors first took on the High Point Home Educators team, and Eli Blevins opened the scoring with a 35-yard blast just 3 minutes into the game. Later in the first half, Keatley Michael tapped in a goal keeper error for a 2-0 half-time lead. Chance Blevins beat the defense in the second half to extend the lead to 3-0. Ailena Bezek closed out the scoring, to post a 4-0 win. High Point was much stronger than the score suggests; they dominated the first half. But the King’s Warriors took advantage of their mistakes for the win.
After a rest period, the King’s Warriors took the field against Shining Light Academy. The SLA team was huge, and vastly improved from last year. The Warriors were visibly fatigued, and the teams played fairly evenly to end the first half 0-0. But the King’s Warriors broke the second half wide open to claim an emphatic 5-0 win. The first goal came after the Shining Light Academy goal keeper deflected Isaac Beckett’s direct kick right to Chance Blevins, who slotted the ball home. The second goal came off a corner kick from Aaron Smith. While trying to clear the kick, an SLA defender deflected the ball into the net for an own goal. Shortly thereafter, Chance Blevins got around the defense and was going to goal when a defender took him down in the penalty box. He put away the penalty kick to the left of the keeper for a 3-0 lead. A few minutes later, Andrew Smith hooked up with Blevins, delivering an outstanding long ball over the top that beat the entire defense. Blevins calmly pushed his shot past the keeper for a 4-0 lead and his first hat trick of the season. Shortly before time, the Warriors were awarded an indirect kick from the far left side of the penalty area. After being served the ball by Eli Blevins, Aaron Smith chipped the goal keeper with an incredible shot that bounced off the far post and into the net for the 5-0 final.
Goalkeeper Jake Dickens turned in back to back stellar performances to post two shutouts in his debut as a King’s Warrior. Other King’s Warriors that contributed to the season opening wins included Brody Young, Jonah Blevins, Aedan Bailey, Alyssa Woodruff, Addison Woodruff, Sydney Stover, Marley Stoneback, and Noah Stoneback.
