FALL: The fall 2023 soccer season had its ups and downs. The varsity/JV club team was very young and took quite a few knocks, but still came away with a respectable season record of 11-12-4.
Our end-of-season invitational tournaments were a great success. Our U-15 team performed well coming in 4th place. Marley Stoneback was awarded the Defensive Player Award. Jace Richmond and Nathan Dillon were both named to the All Tournament Team.
Our U-19 team turned in their peak performances in the U-19 tournament. After a surprise 1-0 loss to Boys Home, the King’s Warriors swept the remaining competition with 3 straight 1-0 wins to win the championship and claim the banner to hang in the gym. Clay Allen scored the winning goal against Dayspring Christian Academy to clinch the championship title. He and Adalee Blevins were named to the All Tournament Team. Zack Fink received the Defensive Player Award. Aaron Smith, who had captained and anchored his team all season, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
The Adult team had a terrific season, finishing with a 7-3-1 record. Highlights included 3 wins against Appalachian Bible College, a tie with Mt. Mission and wins against Carolina Christian College and Tazewell Soccer Club in their end-of-season invitational tournament.
FUTSAL:
For the first time, the King’s Warriors Soccer Club hosted the Southern West Virginia Futsal League at the Countryside Baptist Church gymnasium in Forest Hill. Several of our D2 teams and our middle school team showed a lot of growth. One of their highlights included a 6-5 win over a very strong Oak Hill middle school team in their season finale.
Our high school girl’s team did very well. With only 6 players (2 8th graders, 3 9th graders, and 1 junior), the ladies lost only once, to Woodrow Wilson. They tied them 5-5 in their season-ending rematch.
Our D1 boy’s team dominated the league with a 10-1-1 record. Their only loss was a bitter one, coming at the very end of the season.
Futsal continued into April for the Adult team. The King’s Warriors fielded 3 teams, 2 in D1 and 1 in D2. The D2 team included several high schoolers, but was still competitive. Both D1 teams played well in the stronger division.
SPRING:
The Adult team played a very brief 3-game season. They did have a highlight 5-3 win against Mt. Mission. Clay Allen scored 4 goals to lead the team to their first win over the Grundy team in several years.
The varsity club team had their most successful season in years, closing out the spring campaign with a 12-1-1 record. Their most memorable game was their 6-2 win against Narrows High School. Played as a night game at the end of the winter, the thermometer reading was in the 20’s. With a stiff breeze throughout the game, the wind chill factor was in the teens. The players will remember that game as the coldest they ever participated in.
